The yellow boxfish (Ostracion cubicus) looks, at first glance, like an unlikely model for streamlined design. Its body is essentially a rigid box with a hardened carapace. Yet it swims effortlessly in ocean currents and manoeuvres with remarkable precision. When researchers at Mercedes-Benz studied its hydrodynamics, they discovered why: the boxfish's shape creates a series of controlled vortices along its body that actually help it resist lateral forces and remain stable in turbulent water. Its drag coefficient of 0.06 is extraordinary — far better than most man-made vehicles. Mercedes-Benz's Bionic concept car (2005), derived directly from boxfish proportions, achieved a drag coefficient of 0.19 — compared to 0.26 for a conventional car at the time. It also achieved 20% fuel savings and 80% lower nitrogen oxide emissions using the same diesel engine as a conventional car. The structural boning patterns of the boxfish carapace inspired a bionic body structure that was 40% stiffer yet 30% lighter than conventional steel panels. Though the Bionic concept was never produced commercially, many of its aerodynamic and structural principles have been incorporated into Mercedes production vehicles. It remains one of the most comprehensive biomimetic automotive design exercises ever undertaken.
