Full case study
The saguaro cactus survives in the Sonoran Desert — an environment that receives less than 25cm of rain per year — partly by harvesting water from morning fog and dew using its spines. Each spine has a gradient of wettability from its dry, waxy tip to its water-attracting base. Microscopic grooves along the spine create a capillary gradient that directionally drives water droplets toward the stem, where they are absorbed. This directionality is critical: the cactus spine doesn't just collect water, it moves it in a specific direction through a combination of surface energy gradients and Laplace pressure gradients (caused by the conical taper). No energy is required beyond the initial condensation. MIT researchers, led by Kyoo-Chul Park, have replicated this system in conical copper fibres and PDMS polymer spines arranged in arrays. The artificial spines collect and transport water at rates competitive with the best synthetic fog collectors, and can be integrated into mesh-like sheets or panels. A research group at Xi'an Jiaotong University has designed building facade tiles with integrated cactus-spine arrays for dry desert climates. A 1-square-metre panel in a foggy coastal desert environment can collect up to 3.6 litres per hour — enough to supply drinking water and passive evaporative cooling for a small building.
