The challenge
The global leather industry relies on livestock farming — a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, land use, and water consumption — and on petroleum-based synthetic alternatives that are non-biodegradable and shed microplastics. Fashion brands need a material with leather's performance, aesthetics, and workability, without either environmental footprint.
Nature's strategy
Mycelium is the filamentous underground network of fungi. Like the warp and weft of a woven textile, mycelium threads interlock as they grow, creating a dense, self-reinforcing mat. This natural fibrous architecture gives mycelium sheets their mechanical strength — tear resistance equal to animal hide — without any synthetic binders or plastic additives.
What was emulated
Forager replicates the self-organising, interlocking structure of mycelium threads by controlling growth conditions inside AirMycelium® chambers. Substrate composition, humidity, airflow, and light exposure guide how the mycelium grows — fine-tuning density, thickness, tensile strength, and texture. The result is a material whose structural integrity comes from biology, not chemistry.
The innovation
AirLoom™ Hides are grown using Forager's AirMycelium® vertical farming process: mycelium is cultivated on agricultural by-products inside controlled chambers, guided to grow into continuous sheets up to 1.6 m wide by 30 m long. Sheets are harvested in their natural form and sent to finishing partners for tanning, colouring, and embossing — producing a 100% biobased, home-compostable material with significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions and water use than cattle hide.
