Full case study

Mycelium is the vegetative part of fungal organisms—fine thread-like structures (hyphae) that form extensive networks in soil and decomposing organic matter. Mycelium naturally acts as a binder and structural material in ecosystems, holding soil together and supporting decomposition. Ecovative Design discovered that by growing mycelium on agricultural waste (corn stover, hemp, sawdust), the fungal network naturally binds the materials together, creating a lightweight foam structure. The process is simple: substrate materials are mixed with mycelium spawn, placed in molds, and allowed to grow for 5-14 days. The mycelium binds everything together without adhesives or chemicals. Once the desired density is reached, the material is heated to stop growth. The resulting product is 95% air (like expanded polystyrene foam) but entirely biodegradable. Unlike plastic foam, mycelium packaging can be composted in home gardens or industrial composters, breaking down in 30-90 days. Applications include protective packaging for fragile goods, acoustic panels, thermal insulation, and building materials. The process uses agricultural waste, requires no harmful chemicals, uses minimal energy, and produces zero toxic byproducts. Ecovative has scaled production and partnered with major companies including Bolt Threads for mycelium-based materials used in shoes and accessories.
