Full case study
North American prairies sustained rich, interconnected plant communities for millennia—diverse perennial grasses, legumes, and forbs created deep root systems, restored soil carbon, supported pollinators, and required no external inputs. Modern monoculture agriculture abandoned this model, replacing diverse prairie with single-crop annuals that deplete soil, require constant inputs, and erode ecological function. Wes Jackson and the Land Institute recognised that sustainable agriculture must return to prairie principles: polyculture systems of perennial grains that regenerate rather than deplete soil. This biomimetic approach cultivates multiple grain and legume species together, allowing their root systems to build soil health, fix nitrogen, and resist pests through ecological diversity.
